Rollover and Firestone Tire Controversy

Firestone vs Ford Motor Company controversy

In May 2000, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) contacted Ford and Firestone about a higher than normal incidence of tire failures on Ford Explorers, Mercury Mountaineers, and Mazda Navajos fitted with Firestone tires (later including Ford Ranger and Mazda B-Series pickup trucks). The failures all involved tread separation— in which the outer tread carcass would delaminate and cause a rapid loss of tire pressure. Ford investigated and found that several models of 15 in (381 mm) Firestone tires (ATX, ATX II, and Wilderness AT) had higher failure rates, especially those made at Firestone's Decatur, Illinois plant. Ford argued that Firestone was at fault. Ford's argument noted that its SUVs and pickups equipped with Firestone-competitor Goodyear tires experienced no rollover issues, even at low psi levels. Since most Explorer, Mountaineer, Ranger, B-Series, and Navajo tires have been replaced, the rollover reports have subsided, further lending credit to Ford's position that the design of its vehicles were not at fault. Although the Explorer having a manufacturer recommended inflation of only 26 PSI likely contributed to the tread separation problem by causing the tires to operate at higher than normal temperatures. Part of the rollover issue was poor driver reaction to the tire blowout. When a tire blew, the driver experienced a large jerk and many drivers reacted by jerking the wheel in an attempt to regain control. This action causes a shift of the vehicle's weight, which results in the roll-over of the vehicle, especially when this occurs at higher speeds (many reports of roll-overs were of vehicles being driven at speeds of 70 MPH and above). Larry Webster, a test-driver for Car & Driver magazine was able, in a test simulating dozens of tire blowouts, repeatedly able to bring a 1994 Explorer to a stop without a single rollover, even at speeds of 70 MPH.[6][7] According to Forbes magazine, car experts and NHTSA claim that the vast majority of crash accidents and deaths are caused not by the vehicle, but by the driver, by road conditions or some combination of the two.

Explorer was completely redesigned for the 2006 model year and we were pleased with the new steering, the new suspension, and the new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation. the latest explorer is quieter than previous models, and it rides better. it also leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. the rear seats fold flatter, and the interior has been improved throughout. more important, it's a very nice vehicle that's pleasant to live with and it compares well with the competition. ford mustang com Interior Features ford mustang classics Ford has thrown plenty of crash protection features into the Explorer, including side curtain airbags, however there's no lap/sash belt in the centre of the back seat. ford mustang clubs Summary Wheelbase: 114 in.

The v8 is the latest from ford's 4.6-liter modular family, with single overhead camshafts and three valves per cylinder: two intake and one exhaust, for better breathing. it develops 292 horsepower, and 300 pound-feet of torque. the v8 delivers low emissions as well, meeting the tier ii, bin 5 federal standard, which is compliant with california's low emissions vehicle ii (lev ii) standard. with the v8, you get a six-speed automatic with two overdrives, plus full electronic control of upshifting, downshifting and torque converter functions. Detroit News staff and wire reports  ford mustang body kits and wings Engine: 4.0 L V6 Ford on Wednesday admitted Nasser misspoke when he told the U.S. Congress that Ford had asked Firestone to test its tires at 26 pounds per square inch, Ford's recommended tire pressure. The steering has a nice, hefty feel at highway speeds, while still providing plenty of assist for parking. The suspension is relatively supple, giving the Explorer a nice ride on rough streets. Yet the Explorer does not lean excessively in corners, body roll is nicely controlled and there's a feeling of being solidly planted. The current chassis is some 63-percent stiffer than in older models; chassis rigidity is a key element for crisp handling and a smooth ride. Explorer manages to be isolated from the road, but well connected to it, at the same time. ford mustang cartoon .

In one example, the journal said the documents indicate that ford lowered its recommended tire pressure levels on the firestone p235 atx tires after simulations showed that the lower tire pressure would make vehicle handling more stable. ford mustang body manual 1996 ford mustang boss wallpaper ford mustang coluer sheets To stop the Explorer is a revamped four-wheel disc brake system that produced 60 to 0 stops in a fine 125 feet.
