Rollover and Firestone Tire Controversy

Firestone vs Ford Motor Company controversy

In May 2000, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) contacted Ford and Firestone about a higher than normal incidence of tire failures on Ford Explorers, Mercury Mountaineers, and Mazda Navajos fitted with Firestone tires (later including Ford Ranger and Mazda B-Series pickup trucks). The failures all involved tread separation— in which the outer tread carcass would delaminate and cause a rapid loss of tire pressure. Ford investigated and found that several models of 15 in (381 mm) Firestone tires (ATX, ATX II, and Wilderness AT) had higher failure rates, especially those made at Firestone's Decatur, Illinois plant. Ford argued that Firestone was at fault. Ford's argument noted that its SUVs and pickups equipped with Firestone-competitor Goodyear tires experienced no rollover issues, even at low psi levels. Since most Explorer, Mountaineer, Ranger, B-Series, and Navajo tires have been replaced, the rollover reports have subsided, further lending credit to Ford's position that the design of its vehicles were not at fault. Although the Explorer having a manufacturer recommended inflation of only 26 PSI likely contributed to the tread separation problem by causing the tires to operate at higher than normal temperatures. Part of the rollover issue was poor driver reaction to the tire blowout. When a tire blew, the driver experienced a large jerk and many drivers reacted by jerking the wheel in an attempt to regain control. This action causes a shift of the vehicle's weight, which results in the roll-over of the vehicle, especially when this occurs at higher speeds (many reports of roll-overs were of vehicles being driven at speeds of 70 MPH and above). Larry Webster, a test-driver for Car & Driver magazine was able, in a test simulating dozens of tire blowouts, repeatedly able to bring a 1994 Explorer to a stop without a single rollover, even at speeds of 70 MPH.[6][7] According to Forbes magazine, car experts and NHTSA claim that the vast majority of crash accidents and deaths are caused not by the vehicle, but by the driver, by road conditions or some combination of the two.

Steering feel was also impressive and much improved over previous Explorers. This is only a concept, but Ford tells us it's almost certain the next generation of the venerable Explorer SUV will be a unibody, not a truck/body-on-frame, vehicle — though it may not look exactly like this, inside or out. Ford also said it doesn't plan to soften the vehicle's stance, meaning it won't be a crossover; it should still have true offroad capabilities and other traditional SUV functionality.

There's a very cool globe-looking GPS system in the front, plus rows of seats that stack up to give you more storage space. There’s also a sliding door on the curb side only, so no one need ever utter that dreaded “minivan” word, and a table and seats that slide out from the back to create a work or picnic table for two. I certainly hope that if Ford ever puts this feature into a production car, it locks when the car is in any gear other than Park so some adventure-seeking teens don't find a new way to go street surfing. ford mustang consumer reports ford mustang classics Explorer was completely redesigned for the 2006 model year and we were pleased with the new steering, the new suspension, and the new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation. The latest Explorer is quieter than previous models, and it rides better. It also leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. The rear seats fold flatter, and the interior has been improved throughout. More important, it's a very nice vehicle that's pleasant to live with and it compares well with the competition. ford mustang burnout video Innovation.

The latest Explorer assumes the mantle of class leadership with 10 new advanced safety technologies that come standard. Seven of the 10 are new to the mid-size SUV class, including four new adaptive technologies… Explorer crash safety supervisor Jeff Laya says: "Explorer's new adaptive safety features all work together to estimate the size of the occupant and impact severity, and are then tailored to manage those forces." Sue Cischke, vice president, Environmental and Safety Engineering says: "The 2006 Ford Explorer's suite of available safety features is unmatched in its class. It offers confidence-inspiring active safety technology combined with AdvanceTrac® with class-exclusive Roll Stability Control — to help prevent accidents from occurring." Fact is, the new Explorer meets all known federal frontal- and side-impact crash requirements through 2010. As with the previous model, the 2006 Explorer offers available Safety Canopy™ side air curtains that deploy in certain side-impact collisions or if an impending rollover is detected to help protect front- and second-row outboard occupants. The air curtains feature "roll-fold" technology. If an occupant is improperly seated and resting his head against a window, the Safety Canopy™ is designed to slide between the glass and occupant as it inflates. A new front "sail panel" of fabric attached to the A-pillar also helps position the Safety Canopy™.

The new model forgoes the body-on-frame chassis type of the previous models and features a monocoque or unibody design instead, and with car-like driving dynamics it is expected the new Explorer will be more of a crossover vehicle than an outright 4WD.
