Rollover and Firestone Tire Controversy

Firestone vs Ford Motor Company controversy

In May 2000, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) contacted Ford and Firestone about a higher than normal incidence of tire failures on Ford Explorers, Mercury Mountaineers, and Mazda Navajos fitted with Firestone tires (later including Ford Ranger and Mazda B-Series pickup trucks). The failures all involved tread separation— in which the outer tread carcass would delaminate and cause a rapid loss of tire pressure. Ford investigated and found that several models of 15 in (381 mm) Firestone tires (ATX, ATX II, and Wilderness AT) had higher failure rates, especially those made at Firestone's Decatur, Illinois plant. Ford argued that Firestone was at fault. Ford's argument noted that its SUVs and pickups equipped with Firestone-competitor Goodyear tires experienced no rollover issues, even at low psi levels. Since most Explorer, Mountaineer, Ranger, B-Series, and Navajo tires have been replaced, the rollover reports have subsided, further lending credit to Ford's position that the design of its vehicles were not at fault. Although the Explorer having a manufacturer recommended inflation of only 26 PSI likely contributed to the tread separation problem by causing the tires to operate at higher than normal temperatures. Part of the rollover issue was poor driver reaction to the tire blowout. When a tire blew, the driver experienced a large jerk and many drivers reacted by jerking the wheel in an attempt to regain control. This action causes a shift of the vehicle's weight, which results in the roll-over of the vehicle, especially when this occurs at higher speeds (many reports of roll-overs were of vehicles being driven at speeds of 70 MPH and above). Larry Webster, a test-driver for Car & Driver magazine was able, in a test simulating dozens of tire blowouts, repeatedly able to bring a 1994 Explorer to a stop without a single rollover, even at speeds of 70 MPH.[6][7] According to Forbes magazine, car experts and NHTSA claim that the vast majority of crash accidents and deaths are caused not by the vehicle, but by the driver, by road conditions or some combination of the two.

Explorer earned the best possible impact protection rating in the government's crash tests: five stars for the driver in a frontal impact, the front-seat passenger in a frontal impact, front-seat occupants in a side impact, and rear-seat occupants in a side impact. (This was in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2006 model-year New Car Assessment Program.) Ford says the Explorer is designed to meet all known federal frontal- and side-impact crash requirements through 2010. ford mustang car truck part • 2006 Ford Mustang • 2002 Ford Mustang • 1997 Ford Explorer ford mustang clock [edit]ford mustang boss 201 Three years/100,000 km, the industry average. ford mustang cobra ii The Limited comes standard with automatic headlights, six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, leather-wrapped shift knob, keyless entry keypad, auto-dimming rearview mirror and P235/65R18 tires on machined aluminum wheels. Though car-based SUVs, or crossovers, such as the Ford Edge are gaining in popularity for their smoother ride, better handling, and easier interior access, the Explorer remains a good choice for families that tow. Explorer's truck-based chassis gives it towing capability, while its clever independent rear suspension smoothes the ride for back-seat passengers..
The v8 is the latest from ford's 4.6-liter modular family, with single overhead camshafts and three valves per cylinder: two intake and one exhaust, for better breathing. it develops 292 horsepower, and 300 pound-feet of torque. the v8 delivers low emissions as well, meeting the tier ii, bin 5 federal standard, which is compliant with california's low emissions vehicle ii (lev ii) standard. with the v8, you get a six-speed automatic with two overdrives, plus full electronic control of upshifting, downshifting and torque converter functions. 11 See also

The Explorer hasn't changed; we have. We don't want truck-based SUVs, and their rougher rides and lousy gas mileage..
Technically similar to the original ford explorer, the explorer sport came in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive variants. it replaced the 2-door ford bronco ii, and was larger than the bronco ii. a variant of the explorer sport was sold by mazda as the navajo, which won motor trend's truck of the year award but was discontinued in 1994. The V6 engine is likely to be the same that type that will replace the current straight six that powers the Australian-made Ford Falcon in 2010. ford mustang body steel ford mustang car 1968 2001 Ford Explorer Sport 4WD 6 cylinder 4.0 liter R (L5) Auto 15 19 ford mustang cobra clothing ford mustang car body modifications 1998 Ford Explorer 2WD 6 cylinder 4.0 liter R (L5) Auto 15 20 ford mustang bucket seats ford mustang contact tables • 2005 Ford Explorer • 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac • 1995 Ford Windstar ford mustang code 1131 SAFETY, STYLING MUCH IMPROVED IN LATEST GENERATION.

The latest Explorer assumes the mantle of class leadership with 10 new advanced safety technologies that come standard. Seven of the 10 are new to the mid-size SUV class, including four new adaptive technologies… Explorer crash safety supervisor Jeff Laya says: "Explorer's new adaptive safety features all work together to estimate the size of the occupant and impact severity, and are then tailored to manage those forces." Sue Cischke, vice president, Environmental and Safety Engineering says: "The 2006 Ford Explorer's suite of available safety features is unmatched in its class. It offers confidence-inspiring active safety technology combined with AdvanceTrac® with class-exclusive Roll Stability Control — to help prevent accidents from occurring." Fact is, the new Explorer meets all known federal frontal- and side-impact crash requirements through 2010. As with the previous model, the 2006 Explorer offers available Safety Canopy™ side air curtains that deploy in certain side-impact collisions or if an impending rollover is detected to help protect front- and second-row outboard occupants. The air curtains feature "roll-fold" technology. If an occupant is improperly seated and resting his head against a window, the Safety Canopy™ is designed to slide between the glass and occupant as it inflates. A new front "sail panel" of fabric attached to the A-pillar also helps position the Safety Canopy™. The most important change for 2007 might be the new interior door handles, of all things. We found the door pulls on the 2006 models awkward, traceable to thick armrests engineered for crash protection. This situation has been improved for 2007.
